In the semi-final match played on 26th July 1966 before 94,493 spectators, England defeated Portugal 2-1. In the final played on 30th July 1966 before 96,924 spectators, England won the World Cup for the first and so far only time defeating West Germany 4-2 after extra time. Without doubt the man-of-the-match was the hat-trick hero Hurst. Sold at auction for £37,600. Representing Allan Mullery's 8th, 9th and 11th appearances for England, and covering the quarter-final (home and away) against Spain played at Wembley 3rd April and the Bernabeu Stadium, Madrid, 8th May; and the semi-final against Yugoslavia played at the Stadio Comunale, Florence, on the 5th June. England progressed to the final stages in Italy after a 1-0 home win and a magnificent 2-1 away win over Spain, the latter before a crowd of 120000. In a bruising battle against Yugoslavia, England were denied a place in the final by an 86th minute Yugoslav goal by Dzajic. In the end frustration boiled over when Trivic, not for the first time, chopped Alan Mullery down with a wild and dangerous tackle. Mullery, in his exasperation and anger, turned and aimed a kick at his assailant and was sent off to a crescendo of whistles. It was the first time that an England player had been sent off in a full international. Sold at auction for £1140. The Bulgarians were largely an unknown quantity, having never played at Wembley before. Although England were dominating proceedings it was the visitors who opened the scoring on the break. Hurst equalised before half-time but England could not convert their superiority in the second half and the score remained unaltered after 90 minutes. Sold at auction for £1020. Awarded for the matches played at the Campin Stadium, Bogota, 21st May; and at the Atahualpa Stadium, Quito, 24th May. England beat Colombia 4-0 and Ecuador 2-0 during a highly successful preperation for the 1970 World Cup, with both matches being played at extreme altitude. Off the pitch, however, the tour was marred when Bobby Moore was falsely accused of stealing an emerald bracelet from a jewellers shop in Bogota which, not surprisingly, had an unsettling effect on the whole squad. This season's Home International Championship ended in a three-way tie with England, Scotland and Wales all ending with four points. England drew 1-1 with Wales, beat Northern Ireland 3-1 and drew 0-0 with Scotland, the first encounter between the 'auld enemies' to end in a goaless draw since the historic first international of 1872. England won the first encounter through a late goal by Colin Bell. Sir Alf Ramsey made a total of seven changes for the second match with Mexico very much in mind, but the game finished as a sterile 0-0 draw. In both games, Mullery was tasked with marking a promising young Dutchman by the name of Johan Cruyff. Sold at auction for £2040. Representing the 28th to 31st appearances for England, this cap was awarded when Allan Mullery played in all four of England's 1970 World Cup matches. These consisted of the Group Three games against Romania on the 2nd June, the celebrated match against Brazil on the 7th June, and Czechoslovakia on the 11th June. They were all played at the Jalisco Stadium, Guadalajara, and resulted in 1-0 wins against both the eastern European opposition, but a 1-0 reverse against the eventual World Champions Brazil, with Pele jumping beyond Mullery for the header that brought the wonder save from Gordon Banks. England's reign as World Champions then ended in dramatic circumstances at the Guanajuato Stadium, Leon, on the 14th June, with West Germany overcoming a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 after extra time. Light green velvet 6 panel cap with silver braid and tassle, English Football Association badge to front with 'Portugal' underneath. 1973/74 to peak. Stanley Bowles (born 1948) began his career at Manchester City, although his fiery temper resulted in him being released after a series of off-field incidents. After a brief and unsuccessful stay at Bury, he was signed by Crewe Alexandra, then in the Fourth Division where his skill caught the eye of a number of bigger clubs. In October 1971 he was signed by Carlisle United, at the time a Second Division club, scoring 13 goals in 36 appearances for the Cumbrians. After a managerial change at the club, he joined Queens Park Rangers (QPR) for £112,000 in September 1972. He replaced in the team another QPR folk-hero, Rodney Marsh, who had been transferred to Manchester City six months before (ironically to Bowles' first club). He took over Marsh's number 10 shirt which other players had been reluctant to wear in fear of being compared to Marsh but Bowles had no qualms about taking the shirt as he said that coming from the North, he had never heard of Marsh! With his flair and undoubted natural ability it was inevitable that international recognition would soon come. He made his international debut against Portugal in April 1974 in Sir Alf Ramsey's last match in charge. Overall he only won five caps for England. Advertised at auction for £5000. The then England manager (Sir) Walter Winterbottom remembered the goal in an article he wrote for the programme produced for Mortensen's Testimonial in 1968; "I recall, almost as if were yesterday, the match against Italy in 1948 in Turin. Italy were then unconquered in Europe with a galaxy of star players, and everyone expected them to thrash England soundly. The day of the match was sultry with heat and dampness and for about a quarter of an hour or so England, with Frank Swift in goal, had to defend as if for their very lives. Suddenly a long pass found Stan Mortensen near the halfway line and he set off on one of his typical electric solo runs chased by the centre half. Reaching the penalty area, he feinted, then accelerated again; just when it looked as though the ball was running over the goal line near the edge of the penalty area. 'Morty' screwed a rising shot which hit the roof of the net. The goalkeeper was astonished and so were 80,000 Italians." England went on to defeat Italy 4-0 in this match. Sold at auction for £1680. He joined Manchester United from Manchester Schools in 1949 and turned professional in September 1950. As a centre or inside-forward Viollet belied his slight appearance, lasting the hardest of games and the toughest of challenges. A player of grace and skill he was particularly good at retaining possession and delivering accurate passes. Viollet was a genuine goalscorer and still holds the Manchester United League scoring record of 32 goals in 36 matches in season 1959-60. Viollet was a survivor of the 'Munich Disaster' when he lost many of his team-mates on that fateful February night of 1958. He went on to play in the1958 Cup Final when the whole nation wanted United to win. However, the disruption to the side proved too much and they were defeated by Bolton Wanderers 2-0. In this World Cup Qualifying match, played on 28th September 1961 at Wembley, England defeated Luxembourg 4-1, Viollet scoring one goal. This was Viollet's second and last International appearance for England. Sold at auction for £2400. Copyright www.Christies.com http://internationalcaps.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=9726646 9726646 Bobby Moore's England Football Cap v France 1962 England Football Cap BOBBY MOORE O.B.E. A handful of footballers are held in high esteem by World football supporters and public alike, and without doubt, Bobby Moore is one of them. His grace and poise as part of the last line of defence for England throughout the 1960s and 70s is perhaps best represented when he captained the English national side to their one and only World Cup Tournament win in 1966. His elegance and flair when going forward was countered by his grit and sheer determination, not to mention skill when he had to defend against the World's most famous strikers - who will ever forget his performance against the Brazilian striker Pele in the 1970 World Cup in Mexico? Born in Barking, Essex on 12th April 1941, Robert Frederick Chelsea Moore played for his local school teams Tom Hood School, Leyton, Barking & Leyton Schools and Barking Youth Club before joining West Ham United as an amateur early in 1958. He turned professional with "The Hammers" in June 1958 and made his League debut for them against Manchester United on September 8th 1958 in a match which West Ham United won 3-2. Moore played exceptionally well in his debut for the club but was brought down to earth three days later when he and his team-mates travelled to Nottingham Forest and the East End side were defeated 4-0. Moore hardly played for West Ham United again that season and it wasn't until the arrival of Ron Greenwood as manager in 1961 that Moore was given the chance that would bring him outstanding success at both club and international level for the rest of the decade. Prior to joining Fulham in March of 1974 for a fee of £25,000, Moore made a then record 642 League and Cup appearances for West Ham United. Moore's introduction to playing for England at full international level was something of a surprise to him when he was brought in as cover for Bobby Robson by the then England manager Walter Winterbottom in the pre-World Cup Tour match against Peru on 20th May 1962. The following year during Alf Ramsey's first season as manager of the national team Moore switched to centre-half and became captain of the national side in only his 12th international appearance. Moore was a natural leader for both club and country and it is thought that he is England's youngest-ever captain. His relationship with his manager Ramsey began to flourish and both had the highest regard and utmost respect for each other. Ramsey was an ex-international himself and had appeared for England on 32 occasions and had managed Ipswich Town for seven years taking them from the Third Division to the First Division, winning the Second and First Division titles in successive seasons. He was also part of the famous Tottenham Hotspur 'push-and-run' team of the late 1940s/early 50s and was known as "The General" at White Hart Lane. Moore's rise to international stardom was set in stone as he played a record 18 times for the England Youth Team prior to making eight under-23 international appearances before making his full debut for his country. During the 1960's and early 1970s Moore made 12 appearances for The Football League on top of his then England international appearance record of 108 (the previous record had been the 106 attained by Bobby Charlton between 1958 and 1970). If Moore's mentor at international level was Ramsey, then at club level it was Ron Greenwood (who himself became England manager in 1977). They may not have seen eye-to-eye in a personal sense but both thought highly of each other in a professional capacity which saw the master of strategy (Greenwood) using his captain to United's advantage in both the 1964 F.A. Cup final win against Preston North End and the European Cup-Winners' Cup win the following year, again played at Wembley when United defeated the firm favourites Munich 1860 2-0. Moore's hat-trick of back-to-back Wembley appearances was completed the following year with England's triumph in the 1966 World Cup final. The mid-1960s proved, without doubt, to be the best year's of Moore's professional career. Not only did he captain club and country to the domestic, European and international awards already mentioned, but on a personal level he was awarded the Football Writers' Footballer of the Year Trophy in 1964; he was presented with a solid gold trophy as Player of the World in 1966, followed by the Football Writers' Association "Player of Players" Trophy for captaining the England team to their 1966 World Cup Success. The BBC Sportsview Personality of the Year followed and in 1967 Moore was awarded the OBE. However, in 1973 he was awarded a large silver and enamel inlaid salver measuring almost 17" in diameter which was presented to him by The Football Association as one of only a handful of players to make 100 appearances for England. The above cap represents Moore's 6th International appearance. In the match played on 3rd October 1962 at Hillsborough, England and France drew the match 1-1 Sold at auction for £5000.
